Pico de Arieiro

Pico de Arieiro

The Pico de Ariero

With its altitude of 1818 meters the Pico de Arieiro is the third highest peak on the island.  But fortunately this one can be reached by car.   There are no lush forests here, just a tall mountain towering the clouds, which are playing catch and seek with the mountain peaks.   The views are spectacular from here and when the weather is nice, you could see Porto Santo, the neighbouring island, which is about 30 nautical miles north of Madeira.
From the Pico do Arieiro, you can access all the other major peaks.  During the winter, when the occasional snowflake is reported, locals flock here to discover….real snow.

The video below captures some beautiful images shot by a drone…some of the best we could find.

The path to Pico Ruivo

An excellently built path leads to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak, but do reckon with a two to three hour walk. The window below (komoot walks) will give you all the information you need to prepare for this walk.  The video below shows the actual walk in detail, in case you want to know exactly what to expect.  This is also one of the official walk of Madeira Tourism which you can find more information about on another blog post.
